A STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR YOUR NORTHERN LIGHTS HUNT

01

PLAN AHEAD

Maximise your chances of witnessing the Northern Lights by following our expert tips! Understanding key factors like moon phases, cloud cover, solar activity, and finding dark sky spots can significantly boost your odds. For example, a bright full moon can wash out faint auroras, while strong activity can create stunning photo opportunities – particularly with the brightness of the moon lighting up natural foregrounds. Plan smarter with real-time data.

02

FIND DARK SKIES

Darkness is essential for seeing the Northern Lights, making autumn, winter, and spring the best seasons for aurora viewing. In Iceland’s summer, nearly 24/7 sunlight makes spotting the lights impossible. Below, we’ve provided a map highlighting the main areas of light pollution in Iceland – moving away from these coloured areas will give you clearer views of the Arctic night sky. Plus, we’ve created a detailed guide to the best locations, ensuring you escape light pollution and maximize your chances of witnessing this breathtaking phenomenon.

03

FIND CLEAR SKIES

Aurora Hunting Tip: If you can see stars, you might see the Northern Lights!

Check cloud cover to find clear skies. Use the time slider to track changes, and look for white or light areas on the map for the best viewing spots.

Map colors explained:
🟢 Green – All clouds (composite)
🔵 Blue – Low clouds
🔴 Red – Middle clouds
🟠 Orange – High clouds (Northern Lights may still be visible through them)

04

PICK A SAFE SPOT

Chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland means travelling in the dark, often on icy or snowy roads, making safety a top priority. Avoid stopping on roadsides, as it endangers both you and other drivers. Instead, use designated parking areas for a safer experience. For a worry-free adventure, join our expert-led tours – they handle the planning and safety, so you can fully enjoy the magic of the aurora.

05

MONITOR SOLAR ACTIVITY

Monitoring solar activity is essential for predicting the Northern Lights. The Kp Index, shown on the 9-point scale below, measures the planet’s geomagnetic activity and provides an average aurora strength over a 3-hour period. A Kp of 0–2 indicates low activity, 2–3 offers moderate chances, and 4–6 signals strong displays. Readings of 7–9 are rare and can produce spectacular shows. For the most accurate and up-to-date readings, check the real-time data provided below.

MONITOR LIVESTREAM FROM REYKJAVÍK

The live feed from Reykjavík offers a fantastic opportunity to check for clear skies and catch a glimpse of the enchanting Northern Lights.

REAL-TIME AURORA FORECAST

The image below, sourced from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, offers the most up-to-date view of the auroral oval across the Northern Hemisphere. The farther south the oval extends, the greater the chances of seeing the Northern Lights at lower latitudes. We’ve also included real-time Kp Index readings and a 3-day forecast to track solar activity and aurora strength.

Our custom Kp feed aligns with NOAA’s, using green, yellow, and red colours to indicate higher Kp numbers and stronger geomagnetic activity. As the scale shifts from green to red, your chances of witnessing a vivid Northern Lights display significantly increase.

Very happy with the entire process. Our person tour guide Vjeran was beyond excellent in his knowledge, patience, cheerfulness and his overall style of guiding. Frimman took us on the bus for Aurora viewing and we loved the way he taught us about the Northern Lights and we were very impressed with his ability to assess the energy, the source, the direction and the intensity based on his experience. And he showed us the most spectacular and dazzling aurora in the right spot at the right time.

Epic trip, loved every minute. Everything we saw was stunning- the waterfalls, the black sand beach, the glacier, walking behind a waterfall! The guide was incredibly knowledgable and gave us interesting insights along the way, he was also very charismatic and entertaining. The trip is exceptionally well planned from the heated van with WiFi, to the time at each destination ensuring enough time at each site to enjoy it while moving enough to see as much as possible. All round highly recommend. Tip for bookers- take waterproofs whatever the weather! Waterfalls are wet!

We did the tour on Feb 11 in 2025 and the whole experience was great - the cars were comfy and on time, our guides (Vikingur and the Canadian guy) were super friendly and knowledgeable. Time was never wasted - we saw the aurora already on the way and after stopping at a really great location - the guide setup the equipmemt and took many amazing photos of us when the next aurora events happened. Between the aurora events - the guides told us a lot of interesting facts about aurora and the stars and Iceland, they also setup the telescope for us, served delicious cookies and hot chocolate, and answered all our questions. I couldn't ask for a better experience. Thank you!

My Wife and I had an incredible time on the tour! While we didn't get to see the Northern Lights as clearly as we had hoped, the experience was still fantastic. The tour guide was entertaining and provided a wealth of information. Even if you don’t see the lights—since it’s not guaranteed—you still get to enjoy the stars and learn about them. Overall, it was a memorable experience!

I very very highly recommend this company. Yesterday we went on the whale watching tour which was amazing, the guides were perfect and all staff on board were very friendly and knowledgeable. We managed to see multiple Humpback whales and we found the company very ethical as they kept their space from the whales and were respectful of them. Since we enjoyed this tour so much we decided to book to go on the Northern Lights tour with them later in the evening, this was also amazing, the guide again was amazing, and we managed to see the lights, they even stayed out later so everyone could enjoy the show.

Great crew very helpful, guide (Mike no flash) was very informative and funny, photographer was helpful, boat was well kept with great facilities, we didn’t see the northern lights on our first trip out so booked the next night and we’re rewarded with a great show (kpi 6) from Mother Nature even though it was cloudy I think it added to it. Highly recommend these guys will be booking for wen we return…

Our travel agent booked a Northern Lights cruise for us. On our first attempt the weather wasn’t cooperating so they gave us the option of a refund or to rebook for the next night. We chose to rebook since the main reason we came to Iceland was to see the Northern Lights. The next night was the same so we rebooked for our last night. It started clouding up about an hour before our cruise was set to sail. Initially it was overcast and left little to see. The captain kept manoeuvring the ship to find clear skies. While we waited for the light show the crew kept us entertained with facts about Iceland and star gazing. Finally it started and the sky’s provided us with the most spectacular show. This was definitely a highlight to our trip, well worth the wait and props to the tour operator for their persistence.

We had an amazing experience on this tour. The driver was knowledgeable and helped us understand about northern lights. We were supposed to drive east of Reykjavik but then checking the apps we drove just outside the city where we could see spectacular Northern Lights. We also had photoshoot as Vikings and the hot chocolate at the end was an icing on an already amazing trip.

My experience on the Northern Lights tour with professional photos was absolutely unforgettable! From start to finish, the tour was well-organized, and the team did everything possible to ensure we had the best chance to witness this natural wonder. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate about the Northern Lights. He explained the science behind the aurora, provided historical and cultural insights, and kept us informed throughout the journey.

Baldvin was the most amazing and knowledgeable guide. We got to see an incredible Northern Lights display away from all the other tourist busses thanks to him. He even made us home made hot chocolate and cakes to keep us warm and full of energy late into the night! His excitement to see the Northern Lights was really infectious and made the whole experience even better!

Not sure where to start really. Obviously it’s hit or miss with the aurora and nature is in control. Despite having the best views ever of the lights, our guide Baldvin was just the best host. We had hot chocolates, home made cakes, so much scientific info and excellent photos to help us remember our trip, he knew exactly where to be at what time and made sure everyone was comfortable and warm at all times. An unforgettable experience and I’d argue the best aurora tour company in Iceland.

We thoroughly enjoyed the aurora tour. Devin was our tour guide who is very knowledgeable and shared a lot of insightful information about aurora and the region with us. He brought us to three good spots to see aurora and took excellent photos for us. He stayed with us until we are satisfied with the aurora viewing. We also enjoyed the hot chocolate and Icelandic donuts provided by him.

Our Northern Lights tour was better than we could have even imagined! BG was an amazing guide- super knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer any and all questions. He made sure we all had the best photo settings and that we all got lots of the professional photos taken. The hot chocolate and cinnamon buns were delicious, and of course Mother Nature helped by giving us an absolutely incredible Aurora display. Would recommend 100% 😊

This trip brought us to areas with least light pollution around Reykjavik. Marta, our guide, was simply amazing. She was certain when the clouds would clear for a couple of hours for us to witness the most fascinating aurora lights that we've ever seen. The KPI was strong too, so that helped. Marta took beautiful photographs for many of us to bring home fond memories with. As the group was limited to less than 20 persons, there were ample opportunities for us to take our turns for the photographs, not to mention that the hot chocolate and cinnamon buns were delicious too. Highly recommended!

I used this company twice - 1st on the small group northern lights tour and then 2nd for the South Coast tour. Both trips were fantastic with knowledgeable and friendly guides. Everything ran smoothly. We saw the northern lights, which was even more special for me as it was my birthday. Thank you to Omar for the great tour and for singing happy birthday to me in Icelandic and English 😁 Also a thanks to Dooley for his great tour of the South Coast too. I will definitely come back for more tours of the beautiful Iceland!

My family recently had the good fortune to book and go on the Northern Lights Superjeep tour on the 16/02/25. The whole process was seamless from booking, through to notification on the day as to the likelihood of the tour progressing, the pickup, the actual tour and the drop off. As we waited for collection at one of the pickup points we saw an amazing Ford F350, heavily modified and I jokingly said to my two sons wouldn't it be great if this was our ride. When the vehicle pulled up and called out our names we were delighted. The driver was fantastic and explained everything, we met up with 4 other Superjeeps at the destination, the light show was amazing and the hot chocolate and Vodka shots were welcome as it was bitterly cold. What a brilliant experience and well worth the money - I would highly recommend Superjeep!!!

Interesting factual guide to the aurora. It’s a little way out down by the harbour, but well worth a visit - easily walkable from the town centre. The best part was the virtual reality headset !

My son saw this museum on a YouTube short, I believe, and wanted to put a pin on the map. We enjoyed the science explanations and the beautiful photography. We regretted not buying a 66 North arctic hat which was a little cheaper than the actual store. Also, the young lady at the reception was super helpful.

I bought tickets for a night excursion to see the Northern Lights on Jan 1st 2025 from Reykjavík Excursions. I specifically bought from this company because it included free entry to Aurora Reykjavik on the day of the excursion. The Aurora forecast wasn’t very good, so I didn’t expect to get a good display and thought, at least I’ll learn something at the center. This was a great decision, the display isn’t very expansive, but it is very well laid out, the staff are friendly and helpful and the display was both informative and very well presented. We spent about 90 minutes there and it felt just about right. As a side note, the forecast changed significantly during the evening and we were treated to a spectacular display and this was made even more enjoyable by the fact that we had more knowledge on the subject and realized the significance of the rarity of the red aurora that we witnessed. I’d certainly recommend Aurora Reykjavík especially as a prelude to an excursion!

Very informative exhibit about the Northern Lights and how they are formed. Great video show of the lights over many of Iceland's tourist destinations. The female attendant was absolutely top notch..she made us free coffee, explained and answered all our questions, and then even called and arranged taxis for the 8 of us!!

FAQ

Why do Aurora forecasts change?

Aurora forecasts change because the sun is full of surprises! Solar activity, like solar flares and winds, constantly shifts, affecting how and where the Northern Lights appear. Weather conditions on Earth, especially cloud cover, also play a big role. That’s why checking real-time updates keeps you one step ahead for the best aurora experience.

Are there any other Aurora data sources I should keep track of?

Yes! Keep an eye on the Leirvogur Magnetic Observatory, which tracks magnetic disturbances over Iceland. When the graphs show increased movement, it means solar winds are shaking Earth’s magnetic field – often leading to aurora outbursts. Monitoring this alongside the Kp Index and real-time forecasts can give you the best chance to catch the Northern Lights!

How accurate is the Kp index for seeing the Northern Lights?

The Kp Index is a reliable tool for measuring geomagnetic activity and predicting the Northern Lights, but it’s not perfect. It provides a general forecast averaged over 3-hour periods, so conditions can change quickly. For the most accurate predictions, combine the Kp Index with real-time data on solar activity, cloud cover, and local magnetic disturbances.

What are the best months to see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

The best months to see the Northern Lights in Iceland are from September to April. During this period, the nights are longest and darkest, creating ideal conditions for aurora viewing. The peak months are October to March, when the skies are darkest, and solar activity is often stronger. Just remember to check the weather for clear skies.

What is the difference between a low Kp number and a high Kp number for Northern Lights viewing?

A low Kp number (0–2) means the Northern Lights will likely be faint, appearing as a soft, pale glow – often resembling thin clouds – and are usually only visible in far northern areas. A high Kp number (5–9) brings vibrant, dynamic displays with bright greens, purples, and even reds dancing across the sky, sometimes visible much farther south.

Can I see the Northern Lights in summer?

Seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland during summer is extremely unlikely. From May to August, Iceland experiences nearly 24 hours of daylight due to the Midnight Sun, leaving the sky too bright for the aurora to be visible. For the best chance to see the Northern Lights, visit between September and April, when nights are dark and long.

What are the best Northern Lights forecast Apps to enhance my experience?

To enhance your Northern Lights experience, several apps offer real-time forecasts and helpful tools to find the best viewing spots. Top recommendations include:

  • My Aurora Forecast – Live aurora maps, 27-day forecasts, and customizable alerts. Great for both beginners and seasoned chasers.
  • Aurora Alerts – Northern Lights – Real-time alerts, cloud coverage maps, and Kp index readings. Perfect for instant notifications.
