Aurora over Fagradalsfjall Volcano, Iceland

“Witnessing the intensity and force of an erupting volcano marked one of the most incredible moments in my life. Capturing the juxtaposition of the cold fire in the sky – the aurora – against the hot fire of Earth’s core was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It involved multiple attempts, including long hikes to the eruption site during the night, and the aurora season was nearly concluding. Just before the midnight Sun took over, the Northern Lights appeared one night, right after sunset, enabling the capture of both phenomena in a single image. The picture is a composite of 8 shots with varying exposure times, allowing the aurora to glow against the backdrop of the lava’s incandescence.”

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Grétar Jónsson

I was born and raised in the subarctic town of Akureyri, located in North Iceland. My fascination with the Northern Lights has been a part of me for as long as I can recall.

In 2013, we established Aurora Reykjavík with the intention of sharing our passion with visitors from around the globe.

Katarina Raker

I got my first DSLR at the age of 6, and promptly embarked on a lifelong journey dedicated to landscape photography.

Since 2016, Reykjavík has been my home base. If I’m not at the museum, you’ll find me in pursuit of the Northern Lights.
