ABOUT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

The Northern Lights — or Aurora Borealis — are one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles, and Iceland is one of the best places on Earth to witness them. Created when charged particles from the Sun collide with gases in Earth’s atmosphere, the aurora dances across the night sky in ribbons of green, pink, purple, and sometimes red — a display that never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

In Iceland, the Northern Lights season runs from late August through mid-April, when the long dark nights create perfect viewing conditions. The best chances come with clear skies, low light pollution, and strong geomagnetic activity — all factors you can monitor in real time on our Aurora Forecast page.

While the aurora can appear at any time after dark, displays are most common between 9 PM and 1 AM. Patience is key — and when the lights do appear, the wait is always worth it.

Want to go deeper? Our Um Norðurljósin page is packed with expert guides covering everything from how to read a forecast, to the best photography tips, to the science behind the colours. Whether you’re a first-time aurora hunter or a seasoned sky-watcher, there’s plenty to explore.

FAQ ABOUT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS TOURS

Hvar get ég séð norðurljós á Íslandi?
The northern lights season in Iceland begins in late August and continues through mid/late April.
During this long period, Iceland experiences sufficient darkness for the Aurora to be visible at night.
However, chances of experiencing the northern lights vary depending on the time of year. Find out which months are the best for seeing the Aurora here.
What time does the tour start?
Pick-up begins 30 minutes before departure. The exact pick-up time depends on the season and the forecast. You will receive all details after booking.
What time do the northern lights show up?
Northern lights are statistically often seen between 9:00pm and 1:00am, but they may appear at any time as long as it is dark (and the sky clear).
During the winter months, when the hours of light are limited, the northern lights can often appear as early at 7:00pm.
As the exact time of an Aurora display cannot be predicted, keep your eyes at the sky. And remember, patience is key!

How long do the northern lights last?
Auroras can last any time between few minutes and hours. Each northern lights display is different, and varies in duration. Furthermore, the northern lights are not always visible for the entire duration of a single Auroral episode: they often change in intensity throughout a single display, and can go from very bright to incredibly faint, to the point they are hardly visible at all any more. Learn more about how the northern lights behave duration-wise here.
Where will I be picked up?

We offer pick-up from hotels, guesthouses, and bus stops in central Reykjavík. You can select your pick-up location during the booking process.

Can I see the northern lights when it is cloudy?
Well, that depends. First of all, Iceland is well-known for its unpredictable weather: the fact that it is cloudy now does not mean that the sky will still be cloudy 5 minutes from now. As long as we can find some gaps in the cloud cover, some windows of clear sky – there’s hope. And, even when it’s cloudy, keep in mind that not all clouds are the same. For example, high clouds are often see-through and do not necessarily disrupt our view. Rule of thumb: if you can see the stars, you can potentially see the northern lights too. Once again, keep your eyes at the sky and check the forecast regularly for the most reliable prediction.
What happens if there are no Northern Lights on my tour?

We offer a free retry on another night if the aurora does not appear. This is our Northern Lights guarantee. We recommend booking your tour on your first night in Reykjavík so you have the best chance of rescheduling if needed.

What time does the tour start?

I had an amazing time! I have no complaints, we saw amazing views, learned about fascinating history and folklore, and had delicious food. I would definitely recommend this tour. And even though it was a full day tour, being able to take a brake on the bus in between stops makes a world of difference! Anastasia was a great tour guide!

I highly recommend taking this tour BEFORE you attempt to see the Northern Lights. They do a great job of explaining the phenonium and, more importantly, how to use your camera to capture the moment. Put this tour at the beginning of your trip. You will not be disappointed!

Even if you see the Northern Lights in the wild, you should still book a tour of Aurora Reykjavik. Not only will you learn a ton about the science and lore behind the Lights, you will get to see spectacular displays from all over Iceland on their huge movie screen. This was why I wanted to go, and it did NOT disappoint. Worth the price of admission by itself. But then, it was followed by a 5 minute 360 degree virtual reality presentation of even more Lights displays. So glad I went. Even though I saw the Lights in the wild, I did not feel like I'd really seen them until I went here. Loved it!

A very informative visit, excellent graphics, we had some knowledge of the lights but this explained it in great detail, thankyou. Well worth a visit and great coffee and cakes, very friendly staff, with a wide range of aurora gifts. Wonderfully colourful and an awesome theatre show, so peaceful we could have fallen to sleep. A must do attraction !!

Interesting factual guide to the aurora. It’s a little way out down by the harbour, but well worth a visit - easily walkable from the town centre. The best part was the virtual reality headset !

My son saw this museum on a YouTube short, I believe, and wanted to put a pin on the map. We enjoyed the science explanations and the beautiful photography. We regretted not buying a 66 North arctic hat which was a little cheaper than the actual store. Also, the young lady at the reception was super helpful.

I bought tickets for a night excursion to see the Northern Lights on Jan 1st 2025 from Reykjavík Excursions. I specifically bought from this company because it included free entry to Aurora Reykjavik on the day of the excursion. The Aurora forecast wasn’t very good, so I didn’t expect to get a good display and thought, at least I’ll learn something at the center. This was a great decision, the display isn’t very expansive, but it is very well laid out, the staff are friendly and helpful and the display was both informative and very well presented. We spent about 90 minutes there and it felt just about right. As a side note, the forecast changed significantly during the evening and we were treated to a spectacular display and this was made even more enjoyable by the fact that we had more knowledge on the subject and realized the significance of the rarity of the red aurora that we witnessed. I’d certainly recommend Aurora Reykjavík especially as a prelude to an excursion!

Very informative exhibit about the Northern Lights and how they are formed. Great video show of the lights over many of Iceland's tourist destinations. The female attendant was absolutely top notch..she made us free coffee, explained and answered all our questions, and then even called and arranged taxis for the 8 of us!!
