Itinéraire

Departing from the cruise terminal in Akureyri, this immersive six-hour tour takes you deep into one of Iceland’s most geologically and historically fascinating regions. The first stop is the awe-inspiring Goðafoss waterfall, where turquoise water crashes over volcanic cliffs and Icelandic history flows alongside natural beauty—this is where Iceland’s conversion to Christianity was symbolically sealed over a thousand years ago.

From there, the journey continues to the Lake Mývatn area, a surreal landscape shaped by fire and ice. You’ll walk among the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, remnants of ancient steam explosions, before heading into the otherworldly lava formations of Dimmuborgir—a place of eerie towers and caves long associated with folklore and legends. The tour concludes at Námaskarð, a raw and colorful geothermal field where steam vents and bubbling mud pots give a dramatic view into the earth’s inner forces.

Guided by a local expert and including a packed lunch and roundtrip transport, this tour is ideal for cruise passengers or anyone staying in Akureyri who wants to experience the striking contrasts and stories of North Iceland in just one day.

AVIS DES VOYAGEURS

This was the best excursion of our whole trip and we had been on a lot of excursions on these two cruises. Scott the driver made it so much fun, plus he was very knowledgeable.

Can't praise the team enough for a fabulous tour, to Myvatn Lakes and the surrounding area. Waterfalls, volcanoes, lava fields, underground fissure and thermal pools, hot springs, pseudo craters, tectonic plate ridges - the tour gave us the full spectrum and a great insight in to Iceland's natural beauty. Made even better by being a small group, so much more personal and longer (closer to 6 hours than the planned 4.5). Thoroughly recommend, thanks again!

The whole family (2 adults, 3 kids aged 8,10,12) rated this tour from Akureyri to Myvatn lake, crater and waterfall with our guide Ritchie as the best excursion on our two-week trip. Great sights to see with the right dose of oral information given. Excellently organized, with WhatsApp Groups in addition to telling us when to meet where, also sharing links to even more info about what we saw (also to read again after the tour), share fotos he took of us and even playlists of icelandic music. Good timing to avoid too many other groups at the same spots. And a contagious enthusiasm for Ritchie‘s „adopted home country“ Iceland.

Our tour started not far from exiting the port, a short walk to a big parking lot where all the buses were awaiting. The shore tour was expected to last 5.5 - 6 hours and was done in a comfortable big bus with free wi-fi. Our guide Anna was very competent and overall exceptional (above what we would normally have in this type of tour). She was very knowledgeable and she shared her passion for her land with us. She spoke very good english and was at ease in informing us about the origins of Iceland, the history, geology, myths, local habits, the way that Icelanders think and all this with lots of humor, mainly playing between words in English and Icelandic. Unexpectedly she even gave us the pleasure of singing one song to us. There is not much more to write about the visited places that has not been written in other reviews. We also visited Dimmu Borgir (or Dark Fortress), an area with rock formations as a result of former eruptions. The tour was perfect also because although cold, it was a beautiful sunshine day which made the tour event greater. The scenery surrounding Lake Myvatn is beautiful. We saw swans, ducks and many sheep along the way, which seemed to have the nature just for themselves. The driving was very peaceful and uneventful and Aaron was obviously an expert driver. The tour was well planned, so we didn't have very long drives, but instead, those were well paced between our stops. Undoubtedly the places that we visited are "sold" by themselves, but the tour wouldn't have been as good without the superb company of Anna and the expert driving of Aaron. Worth mentioning that this tour included a small lunch, we got a bag with a sandwich, a juice and a bar of chocolate.
