Very informative exhibit about the Northern Lights and how they are formed. Great video show of the lights over many of Iceland's tourist destinations. The female attendant was absolutely top notch..she made us free coffee, explained and answered all our questions, and then even called and arranged taxis for the 8 of us!!

An extremely informative place to visit before my northern lights tour. A good preview really And the person in charge at the time of my visit, Shannon, was extremely friendly and approachable. Had a lovely time overall! Thanks Aurora Reykjavik!!

The Aurora building at the top of the Old Harbour is a nice little attraction that give a great insight to the Aurora Borealis, or as it is more commonly known, the Northern Lights. Inside there are small displays explaining the phenomenon and how it happens, a small cinema where you can sit for 20 or 30 minutes or so seeing images of the lights from locations all over the island and then in the small shop and coffee bar you can sit down for the final treat. A virtual reality headset with about 3 minutes of the Borealis crashing all over the sky. That bit is great, as your head swings from side to side and up and down trying to follow it all over the sky as it happens before your eyes. It is quite small exhibition and can be visited in an hour or less which is great if like us for instance, you need to fill a little time before going out on a boat or something. There is an entrance fee which is ok, but beware if, like us you have booked with an excursion such as a Northern Lights sightseeing tour that promised a free admission the Aurora Centre on the day of the tour.

I bought tickets for a night excursion to see the Northern Lights on Jan 1st 2025 from Reykjavík Excursions. I specifically bought from this company because it included free entry to Aurora Reykjavik on the day of the excursion. The Aurora forecast wasn’t very good, so I didn’t expect to get a good display and thought, at least I’ll learn something at the center. This was a great decision, the display isn’t very expansive, but it is very well laid out, the staff are friendly and helpful and the display was both informative and very well presented. We spent about 90 minutes there and it felt just about right. As a side note, the forecast changed significantly during the evening and we were treated to a spectacular display and this was made even more enjoyable by the fact that we had more knowledge on the subject and realized the significance of the rarity of the red aurora that we witnessed. I’d certainly recommend Aurora Reykjavík especially as a prelude to an excursion!

My son saw this museum on a YouTube short, I believe, and wanted to put a pin on the map. We enjoyed the science explanations and the beautiful photography. We regretted not buying a 66 North arctic hat which was a little cheaper than the actual store. Also, the young lady at the reception was super helpful and friendly.

Interesting factual guide to the aurora. It’s a little way out down by the harbour, but well worth a visit - easily walkable from the town centre. The best part was the virtual reality headset !

Even if you see the Northern Lights in the wild, you should still book a tour of Aurora Reykjavik. Not only will you learn a ton about the science and lore behind the Lights, you will get to see spectacular displays from all over Iceland on their huge movie screen. This was why I wanted to go, and it did NOT disappoint. Worth the price of admission by itself. But then, it was followed by a 5 minute 360 degree virtual reality presentation of even more Lights displays. So glad I went. Even though I saw the Lights in the wild, I did not feel like I'd really seen them until I went here. Loved it!
